Troubleshooting

Before you call: a quick homeowner guide

Arizona heat is hard on AC systems. Here's what you can safely check yourself — and clear signs it's time to call a pro. When in doubt, give us a ring; we're happy to walk you through it.

AC is running but not cooling

What you can check

  • Set the thermostat to cool and lower the temperature below the room reading.
  • Check and replace the air filter if it's dirty — a clogged filter starves the system of airflow.
  • Make sure the outdoor condenser has clear airflow and isn't blocked by plants or debris.
  • Check your circuit breaker and reset it if it has tripped.

When to call us

If the filter is clean, the thermostat is set to cool, and the breaker is on but the air still isn't cool, you likely have low refrigerant or a frozen coil. Turn the system off to prevent damage and call us for a $89 diagnostic (waived with an approved repair).

Water leaking from the indoor unit

What you can check

  • Turn the AC off to stop the leaking and prevent water damage.
  • Locate the condensate drain line and try clearing it with a wet vacuum.
  • Check the drain pan for standing water or debris.

When to call us

If the drain stays clogged or water keeps pooling, call us. In Arizona, dust and mineral buildup clog drain lines often, and a tune-up includes clearing and checking the line.

System won't turn on at all

What you can check

  • Check the thermostat batteries and make sure it's set to cool.
  • Check the main electrical breaker and any AC disconnect near the outdoor unit.
  • Confirm the thermostat display is lit and responding.

When to call us

If the breaker and thermostat are fine but the system still won't start, you may have a failed capacitor, contactor, or control board. Call us rather than poking at the electrical — we'll diagnose it safely.

Uneven cooling — hot and cold rooms

What you can check

  • Check that supply vents in the problem rooms are open and unblocked.
  • Replace a dirty filter that could be limiting airflow.
  • Make sure return vents aren't blocked by furniture.

When to call us

If vents are open and airflow is still weak or uneven, you may have duct leaks, an unbalanced system, or an improperly sized unit. We can inspect your ductwork and recommend the right fix.

Ice on the outdoor lines or indoor coil

What you can check

  • Turn the system off immediately and switch the fan to on to help melt the ice.
  • Check and replace a dirty air filter.
  • Make sure all supply vents are open.

When to call us

A frozen coil usually means low refrigerant from a leak or restricted airflow. Once the ice melts, call us — running a frozen system can damage the compressor. We'll find the leak and give you a flat-rate repair price.

Safety first

Never open electrical panels or touch refrigerant lines yourself — both can be dangerous. If you smell gas, leave the home and call your gas company. For anything beyond the simple checks above, call a licensed professional. Our diagnostic is $89 and waived when you approve the repair.
